Hello, Goodbye?

I’m back!...kind of.

It’s been many months since my last post. During this extended break, I thought about ending this blog, and also about keeping it going. I’ve liked having the blog, but, odd as it may sound, posting with any regularity was often more of a chore than it was enjoyable, especially when I was busy with other things. That’s the main reason why I stopped posting last February.

I’ve finally arrived at a decision that makes sense for me. I will no longer be posting to this blog. I am, however, taking the ‘photo a day’ idea over to You Fill Me With Inertia, my Tumblr page.  I’ve posted a few photo a day images there already, and plan on continuing it. You Fill Me With Inertia is a mixture of my creative work, old postcards, odd old ads and photos, interesting art, and other odds and ends. I describe it as “absurdity, ephemera, and art”. It has about ten times the followers as this blog has ever had, so I’ll reach more people with the photo a day posts. I hope you check it out. If you are only interested in the photos, I’ve tagged all those posts with ‘tyler’s photo a day’, so searching for that phrase will find them.

I’m not deleting this blog, I’m going to leave it up, as it’s a nice collection of images that people may want to browse through on occasion.

See you over on Tumblr!

School Of Beauty Culture

A couple of months ago, I went to an estate sale close to my house. In an upstairs bedroom, I found a box of old Kodak B&W photo paper labeled 'do not open'. Knowing that the paper wouldn't be good, I opened the box to find about a dozen 8 X 10 B&W prints. The people running the sale told me they were their sister's photographs from a photo class, and sold me the box for $5. The photos are mostly somewhat mundane urban scenes, but printed well. I knew I'd be making collages from them.
I cut the image from an old nursing textbook, and thought it looked great on this photo. It sat unfinished in my studio for a few weeks while I looked for more things to collage with it, before I realized that it was complete as is and didn't need anything else.

Autumn Woods

Shot last October on a sunny, warm day. I would like one of those about now.

Multiple Neon

Multiple exposures of a neon sign in the window of a locksmith shop. Shot a month or so ago with my flipped-lens Brownie camera.

Pods

Milkweed pods in my Mom's backyard. Shot around Christmas with my flipped-lens Kodak Brownie camera.

Collage

I made this collage a few weeks ago. Haven't done much collage recently, the start of the new semester (I'm taking a class as well as teaching) is keeping me both busy and exhausted. Just started a couple today, however, that I hope to finish tomorrow.

Shot with my flipped-lens Kodak Brownie camera, in a cemetery someplace. Can't really remember where.

Gray

Oops, missed a couple of days posting. I blame the beginning of a new semester, adjusting to a complete change in schedule from my usual work hours, and being busy with work from a class I'm taking.

Anyway, this gray panorama was shot while riding a ferry from Vancouver to Victoria, BC last summer.

Frosty

Shot a few years ago on a bitterly cold January day. I've since replaced these old single pane windows in my house, and the new ones don't frost up. Either that, or with global warming, it never gets cold enough anymore for it to happen.

Caps, Nails, Hosiery

Golden Statue

That's not really the color of the sculpture, it's the color of the light illuminating it, as contrasted with the color of the daylight behind it. Shot today in the Art Institute of Chicago.

Tree

I really can't remember anything about this photo. It was shot with my Holga camera, but I don't know where or when.

Locksmith

I shot this earlier today, while on a walk around my neighborhood. It was the neon signs that caught my attention, but I also liked the rows of key blanks hanging in the shop.

Turquoise Devil

Diablo Lake in North Cascades National Park. The water really is that color, mineral runoff from the surrounding mountains causes the water to turn turquoise.

Barn

I shot this at my Mom's in Michigan on Thanksgiving weekend. That barn-shaped shed in the backyard  tends to show up in a lot of the photos I make there.

Meet Meat

My internet was out last night and this morning for several hours, so I was unable to post yesterday. Here's a collage to catch up. I just made this today, and I'm really happy with how it turned out.

So Bad It's Good

Every once in a while I'll shot a photo that is pretty much a complete technical failure, but I end up liking it in spite of (or because of) the flaws. This is one of those, shot from a moving car on Thanksgiving weekend.
