No comment here, no comment at all. We only wanted to introduce you to one of our very special citizens, little Anthony Fremont, age 6, who lives in a village called Peaksville in a place that used to be Ohio. And if by some strange chance you should run across him, you had best think only good thoughts.

January can be amazingly cruel. It seems that every January there's a brief warm period which gets rid of all the accumulated snow and puts a glimmer of hope for an early spring in your heart. Then winter comes roaring back. We're in the 'roaring back' stage now in Chicago after several days in the mid 40's. Ok, the warmish days weren't all that great, they were heavily overcast and rainy. Still, today's 2o degree weather and blowing snow seems like a slap in the face.

I shot this with my 4-lens Nishika camera a couple of years ago. That's the entrance to the Shedd Aquarium in Chicago. The inflatable crocodile is there basically as crowd control, and it's pretty surreal to see people walking into it's mouth. I bet kids love it!

I shot this with my toy Holga camera in San Francisco in October, 2007. These houses are in the Haight Ashbury neighborhood, famous as the epicenter of 60'a hippie culture. Now, the corner of Haight and Ashbury is home to The Gap and a Ben & Jerry's ice cream shop.

I just found a neat little software online called Shape Collage. It's a free download that allows you to take a group of photos and generate an instant collage in various shapes. I probably won't use it much, but it's a fun little toy. As a test, I took a bunch of vacation photos from last summer and collaged them into a star shape. It turned out pretty well.

I really like this shot of the evening fog rolling in and covering the Golden Gate Bridge. If I lived in San Francisco, I'd probably get tired of the fog after a while. As a tourist in love with that city, I find it beautiful. This was shot from the kitchen window of my sister's old apartment in October. 2007.

I shot this photo in the Communist Sculpture Park in Budapest in August, 2007. Very cool place, the Communist Sculpture Park. One of my favorite things in Budapest.
I made a cyanotype print of this photo a few months after I shot it, which turned out pretty well.

This is one of those 'playing around in the studio' photos. I shot it just a few days ago. A sliver of sun was coming in through the window in my studio, creating a patch of light on my desk. I grabbed an old photograph and an old drawer knob made of clear plastic that looks like a faceted sphere, and shot the light passing through the knob onto the photo.

Here's another photo made at the same time as the one I posted yesterday. That's a glass candle holder sitting on top of colored party picks. It was shot just like the photo I posted yesterday, by putting the objects on a light table and aiming a 4X5 view camera straight down at them.

This photo was shot as part of a student project for a class in studio lighting I took in 1994. I used a 4X5 view camera to shoot it. It's pretty simple, just plastic party picks and pieces of broken glass arranged on a light table that was sitting on the floor of the studio. I found these recently while going through a crate of old photos. My scanner couldn't handle them, so I shot them with my digital camera on a copy stand and the transparencies sitting on a light table. I'm thinking of posting a few of them to Lightbender, my other blog, so if you like this, keep an eye out for them there.

I know we seem to be experiencing a particularly cold and snowy winter in Chicago, but it has not seemed so bad to me. Until today, that is. Today it was the kind of cold that seems to sink into your bones and stay there. I've been freezing all day. So, here's a picture taken in Maui, in August. Wish I was there right now.

Well, the forecast major storm turned out not to be so bad, although we did receive a few inches of snow today in Chicago. I braved the weather, not to shoot (this photo was shot a couple of years ago), but to go to the Chicago Cultural Center to hear Barbara Crane talk about her work.

Can't you see it? The sound of wind blowing through the trees, a child's voice slowly singing nursery rhymes, and this horse swing, swaying in the breeze in blurred motion.
A double exposure made with a Holga camera in my Mom's backyard.
