Panoramas

Busy week at school, I can't believe I've missed posting here. Here's a couple panorama/mosaic images to catch up. The first one was taken in Budapest in August, 2007. I like how Kevin is shooting a photo of himself.

This one was taken in the crater of Haleakala, the dormant volcano on Maui. It's very beautiful and otherwordly up there.

This one was taken in Madison, WI early in 2008. It's at the natural history museum on U-W's campus. Kevin is in that one twice as well.

Hot!

A quick post, I'm about to leave for work.
This photo is a chili pepper plant in my Mom's garden, taken last September. I could go for some garden fresh veggies right about now. I could also go for some warmer weather.

Zwolle

This panorama was taken in Zwolle, The Netherlands, in 2005. I was there for an educational exchange, it was my second full day overseas, and I was pretty jet lagged. This day was full of 'official' things I was doing as part of the exchange, but I took a small break to wander outside for a few minutes and shoot these photos.

This is an ordinary street in Zwolle, but I thought it was pretty.

Somewhere Over America

This photo was shot out of a plane window while I was flying to San Francisco a couple of years ago. I like how the landscape changes-at the bottom of the photo it's green and very hilly, but the land at the top of the photo looks dry and brown (and maybe not quite as many steep hills as the bottom half). I also like the clouds, and the shadows they cast on the ground below them.

I really have no idea where this is, all I know is that it's somewhere between Chicago and San Francisco. Any guesses?

Ugly Carpet

OK, so not the best photo, but I had to share this hideous carpet. It's in the Maui airport. I'd like to think it's there as sort of a buffer between the beauty of Maui and the drab rest of the world, but I don't think that's what was intended.

Inauguration Day

Finally, after eight long, painful years, the miserable Bush administration comes to an end. I have high hopes for president Obama, I think the country needs him right now.

I tried to find a photo for today's post that fit the inauguration theme, and I think I did pretty well. It's the U.S. flag, (as envisioned by artist Nam June Paik), and it was shot in Washington, DC at the Hirshhorn Museum, one of my favorite museums in DC.

Chinatown Shop Window Panorama

The photos that make up this panorama were shot late last fall in Chicago's Chinatown. I was shooting images to print using an alternative printing process, to create the body of work which was exhibited last April.
I love the mix of figures in this shop window display. Most are Asian, but there's an odd fake Hummell figure stuck in there as well.

My Cranbrook Studio

I was browsing through some old negatives a couple of days ago, and found this photo. It was taken in my studio at Cranbrook Academy of Art at the beginning of my final semester of graduate school, in January, 1998. Looking out the window to the right you can see the street which runs through the center of the art academy campus. On the left is a piece I had recently finished. The print of the kid with the eyes cut out is me. It's either my first or second grade school photo.

Dutch Stereotype

I took this photo while riding a bike on a fietspad (bike path) which ran alongside a canal in The Netherlands. Bikes, a canal, cows, windmill in the distance, pretty much a Dutch stereotype.
I'm not making fun of the Dutch, by the way. The Netherlands is a really pleasant place that I hope to return to someday.

For Sale

This is a closeup of a sale flier taped to a light pole. I took the photo on the same day I took the photo in yesterday's post, in Chicago's Chinatown. I haven't shot in Chinatown in a while. Probably won't get to it for a while, I'll wait for Spring.

Colors & Textures

This was shot in Chinatown last spring. There's not much to say about it, really. I just like how the colors and textures work together here.

Galena Holgarama

I was in Galena, IL, for a quick winter getaway right before the new year. I posted a panorama I made there a few days ago. Here's another one, smaller than the last. It was made from two shots taken with the Holga camera. I wasn't planning on making a panorama when I shot these, but I saw that they fit together and gave it a shot.

Chinaown 'L'

Here's a shot taken with my Holga camera while waiting for the 'L' in Chinatown on a cold Saturday afternoon a few weeks ago. I like the backlit figures and the graininess of the photo.

Flowers

It was dreadfully gray and overcast in Chicago today, and I had a dentist appointment to repair a broken crown. My new temporary crown fell out right after dinner, and for some reason I'm so tired tonight I can barely keep my eyes open.

OK, so things aren't that bad, really. In spite of it all, I'm in a good mood. I just need something bright and sunny to perk me up, like...flowers!

San Fran Pan

People seemed to enjoy the photo of San Francisco I posted yesteday. I also recieved some nice comments on the Galena panorama I posted a couple of days ago. So, putting both of those ideas together, here's a panorama made in San Francisco.

These photos were taken in Chinatown in October, 2007. I was in San Francisco for a week, shooting as part of my sabbatical. I made several panoramas there, but haven't really done anything with them (although one came really close to being made into a gum bichromate print).

Russian Hill

I took this photo in San Francisco a couple of years ago. It's looking up Russian Hill from Telegraph Hill in North Beach. If you look towards the right hand side near the top of the photo, you'll see Lombard St., which is called the most crooked street in the world and is a popular tourist spot. It isn't the most crooked street in the world, however. It's not even the most crooked street in San Francisco. I've been on a street in San Francisco that's much more crooked. It just isn't in a touristy area, so no one knows about it.

I made a cyanotype bookmark based on this photo which I have listed for sale on my Etsy page. Here's what it looks like.

Nothing

This photo is kind of like Seinfeld-about nothing. I took it with my toy Holga camera last summer on a dreadfully hot, humid day. I was wandering around waiting for a minor car repair to be finished, and shot this at the loading dock of a shopping mall.

I like this photo, even it it is random. I like the lines, and the blue sky contrasted with the orange semi trailer works well.

Happy New Year!

Here's a quickly shot panorama made on Dec. 30 in Galena, IL. Galena is a really pretty town, and the town and surrounding countryside are surprisingly hilly. These photos were taken on a street two blocks off of (and several stories above) Main St.
